Leyland Sound Design can trace its roots back to the late sixties, when our founder, Lee Pattman, a very young, classically trained pianist, discovered rock and roll. Like many young aspiring musicians, he could not afford high priced brand name equipment. A budding guitarist and bass player, Lee created his first speaker cabinet, and revamped an old mono record player tube amp for his first piggyback "stack"
After many years and many strange turns (playing pop rock, heavy metal, and even jazz in his father's big band) and lots of gear later, Lee took a 10 year hiatus, taking time to graduate in electronics engineering and burn out in the hitech industry. Lee returned to music as a hobby in the late 80's and got a job with a major Canadian musical instrument retailer.
Buying an old Fender Bassman and cabinet in really rough shape, Lee decided to restore them faithfully to original condition, and did such a good job that he got requests from other musicians to restore their equipment. After finding that one of his bass combos was too heavy to bring up and down stairs to jam and recording sessions (125 pounds), he determined to design his own cabinets to save the backs of the more mature musicians. After experimentation, Lee settled on a closed back, front ported design made using 3/4 pine and baltic birch baffles. This provided an extremely efficient and lightweight cabinet that had great tone, working well for both guitar and bass. These cabinets have had very favorable reception, and Lee has since branched out into unique cabinets custom designed for guitarists. |
